a place built around play.

kindred is a family-owned play café in Tema, created for children and the grown-ups who come with them.

we bring together open-ended play, nature, food, books, workshops and immersive experiences in a calm, home-like environment designed for families to spend meaningful time together.

from babies discovering through movement and touch, to children learning through making, storytelling and experience, to grown-ups finding space to reconnect, create and simply be — kindred gives play room to grow.

before kindred,
there was a home.
kindred didn’t begin with finding a venue.
it began with our family home.

for decades, these rooms and gardens have held children at play, birthdays, celebrations, long afternoons, friendships and generations of families gathering together.

for our family — and many of the people who grew up around us — it became known simply as the fun house.
The place our friends, our siblings’ friends and our parents’ friends kept finding their way back to.
when it came time to create kindred, we didn’t want to erase that history. we wanted to continue it.

the house has changed. what it has always been for hasn’t.
still a family affair.
kindred is a small, independently owned and family-run business.

that shapes the decisions we make — from how many families we welcome at a time, to the toys and materials we choose, the food we serve and the experiences we create.

we’re building the kind of place we want our own families to spend time in: thoughtful without feeling precious, stimulating without being overwhelming, and comfortable enough that grown-ups want to stay too.

play doesn’t stay the same,
but neither do we.

it starts early.

before language, children are already learning through movement, repetition, touch and curiosity.

it grows with us.

play becomes building, drawing, gardening, cooking, making, storytelling, experimenting and learning new skills.

it doesn’t belong only to children.

adults need curiosity, creativity, laughter, connection and room to try things too.

it doesn’t have to be loud to matter.

we believe in calm environments, open-ended materials, nature and enough time for children to become absorbed in what they’re doing.

play.

freedom to explore and engadge.

the word “play” comes from an old English root (plegan), meaning to move lightly, exercise, occupy oneself and recreate. over time, its meaning expanded to include games, imagination, performance, creativity and freedom to explore.

play can look like many things.

at kindred, we believe in a wide, wonderful definition of play.

sometimes play is quiet and self-directed.

unhurried. absorbed.

deeply focused.

sometimes play is messy.

digging, building, pouring, planting, testing.

sometimes play is learned through hands.

making, preparing, practising a partical skill.

sometimes play is shared.

through stories, workshops, discovery and doing something alongside someone else.
